The Project

450 Keys of Elevated Luxury on Canal Street

From France to Haiti to New Orleans

The remarkable journey of the Godard family spans three continents and two centuries, marked by elegance, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to refined hospitality.

The French Aristocracy • 1760s

François Marc de Godard was born into French nobility, his family distinguished by their service to the crown and their appreciation for the arts. The Godard crest—featuring the fleur-de-lis, royal crown, and baroque flourishes—symbolized their lineage and commitment to excellence that would define generations to come.

Saint-Domingue Prosperity • 1780s

Seeking new opportunities, François Marc relocated to Saint-Domingue (now Haiti), where he established successful plantations and met Marguerite Richette, daughter of a prominent Creole family. Their union blended French refinement with Caribbean warmth, creating a unique cultural identity that would become the foundation of their hospitality philosophy.

The Haitian Revolution • 1791-1803

The revolution brought upheaval to Saint-Domingue. Like many French colonial families, the Godards fled to New Orleans in 1803, bringing with them their refined European sensibilities, Caribbean influences, architectural knowledge, and most importantly, their commitment to gracious hospitality that transcended borders and circumstance.

Establishing the Hotel • 1803

On historic Royal Street in the French Quarter, François Marc and Marguerite established their grand residence, soon opening its doors to fellow refugees and distinguished travelers. The hotel quickly earned a reputation for Old World elegance combined with Caribbean hospitality, becoming a haven for those seeking refuge, culture, and refined comfort in the New World.
